Minimum thickness for Ultrasonic testing

Dear Sirs!

Please help me a problem follow as:
I don't know that minimum thickness for Ultrasonic testing in accordance with ASME BVP code how much?. Because some one said with me that, 6 mm is minimum thickness for ultrasonic testing in accordance with ASME BVP code. Please for me a advise, if this above is correct, please show me detail.

I could not find any limitation on thickness on the ASME BPV code. Calling ASME BPV code is very general. Which section do you refer to? The only thickness related note I found on ASME VIII Div. 2 is Table 7.3 where you can see that for joints types 1,2,3 for shell thickness below 13 mm RT is the only option.
My personal judgment about minimum thickness is that with Manual UT the a.m. limitation is very wise. With AUT or SAUT methods using PA this can be safely and efficiently reduced down to the 6 mm you mentioned, or even slightly lower.

Dear Mr. Diep,

Just follow Special/ actual Specification you use. Cause by the death zone of your probe and material (mean death zone). So now, technical change rapidly, some new technique said that death zone is smaller (5 or 4mm).
You should follow Specification you refer, thay said 8mm, mean minimum 8mm, 6mm, mean 6mm.

Thanks for your advise.
I have just seen at ASME VIII, 6 mm is minimum thickness for ultrasonic testing in lieu of radiography testing but no ASME VIII before 2007, that is ASME VIII 2013 Division I UW 51.
With my opinion, 6 mm is minimum thickness for UT in lieu of RT, actually depent on UT set manufacture combine with ASME committee to decision this problem.
please reply for me as soon as posible.

"Section 8 Div 1 use of Div 2 7.5.5- 6mm min thickness" but 7.5.5 use Section V - Mandatory VIII: Only apply for PAUT or TOFD, not for manual UT.

Finally, 13mm, do you agree?

No i do not agree. The minumum thickness for Section 8 Div 1 use of Div 2 7.5.5 is 6mm as I stated. Look at the text in Div 1 for yourself.

Section V Mandatory Appendix 8 is the requierments to follow when performing automated or semi-automated UT examination, for any technique, when a fracture mechanics based acceptance criteria is used. It is not limmited to PAUT or TOFD. For example automated or semi-automated conventional UT. Further it has nothing to do with UT thickness limitations in ASME. Any thickness limitation is set by the construction code itself.

Dear Toung,

CC 2235 is its own document and the thickness limitation it states (13mm) is not applicable to all of ASME.

I would safely say, this limit depends on your system set up. You can not look in to any space < dead zone; size< near zone. So, why not follow these guidelines and conclude accordingly? I have done conventional UT on 4" dia x 5-6 mm A53 butts to ABS supervision in India- early 90s, I guess.
