Re: NDT for checking under insulation corrosion
There are a number of techniques with varying degrees of success/cost/benefit

Small Bore Piping the LIXI profiler is a relatively low cost and simple device.
4" and above Guided Wave Ultrasonics is a suitable technique at medium cost but requires removal of a 12" band of insulation at typically 40 Metre intervals.
Flash radiography is a low cost technique but may have poor resolution.
Digital Radiography is a higher cost option but does have good resolution with no disturbance of insulation.

First option is to conducte a good visual and susceptibility assessment in line with API 570 guidance.

There is only one sure way: remove the insulation and do visual inspection.

All other techniques have their limitations which the suppliers don't usually tell you till afterwards. Guided ultrasonic can work well on 2" pipe (we have reached 60m under perfect conditions)but usually have problems due to interference from supports and branches. INCOtest can work on larger diameter pipes under some circumstances, and not others. Neutron radiography can detect wet insulation.

Whatever you decide to do: verify the results by stripping.

We have tried several of the techniques mentioned, but the only one that has given us confidence so far is stripping insulation.
