Ultrasonics for Cement Lining

1) Is there any Ultrasonic technique to measure lining/ coating thickness on steel pipes?

2) Can dual probes help in this regard?

Hello,

Yes, there are a few methods that could be used to measure the thickness of concrete / cement linings and or coatings. The 1st is Ground Penetrating Radar which will measure the thickness of the concrete by detecting the strong dielectric change at the concrete-steel interface. This method must be done from the concrete side not the steel side.
The 2nd method is Impact Echo testing which essentially uses very low frequency impacts on the concrete surface. The frequency response from the echo at the interface can be correlated to a thickness.
The 3rd method would be to use Radiography to get a profile image of the pipe. This method may/may not work depending on the size and thickness of the pipe and concrete.
