I think that the acoustic emission method could meet your need. If corrosion is active, it is possible to detect and locate it by carrying out an acoustic listening over one definite testing period.

Eddy Current is the widely accepted and specified method for corrosion assesment in non-ferrous material with single side access.

If you have two side acces then radiography is a possibility also.

Hi,

Just to put the method in its correct perspective, AE will work only when the discontinuity is unstable, i.e. growing. All corrosion may not result in formation of such discontinuities. There are special purpose ultrasonic testing techniques to give you a A-scan view of several layers, if they are in acoustic contact with each other. As already mentioned by others, Eddy Current Testing and Radiography too could help.

One novel (I am not sure whether it is really novel) method could be to conduct a periodic Infra-Red Thermography Test on the structure. There is especially one technique called Flash Thermography which I feel is the best approach. I hope some one on the forum will give you more information, or you could check out the sites giving more information on IRT.

Vibration Analysis too could in theory give you a lot of information.

As with most inspection problems the technique applicable will be controlled by the issues of detection, sizing and access ultimately tempered by cost.

Corrosion detection in ageing aircarft has been successfully measured using UT, ET and Thermal Wave Imaging (Flash IRT) and AE all as discussed by other respondents.

An Internet search should reveal information on all of the referenced techniques. In order to sleect which is best suited to your application you need to consider the morphology of the corrosion, its position within the structure and then the ability of the various techniques to penetrate and respond within the geometic configuration you are posing.

We developed methods using acoustic emission to locate and map corrosion in honeycomb panels in 1974 for the US Air Force. This technique was in use for many years at the USAF depot in Sacramento, CA. Today we have a nice portable AE instrument, the AED-2000, that would be appropriate for use on aircraft in the field or depot maintenance. I would be happy to provide more details on the practice of the technique.

With regard to the topic of aircraft corrosion, Eddy Current testing (ET) is an applicable method that is further enhanced when using an ET C-Scan imaging. As there are numerous geometry related signals that must otherwise be sorted out via technique optimization and/or inspector experience, providing an easily understood image is of great value.

Eddy Current is a good method for corrosion inspection in non-ferrous material with single side access. Our instrument DAMI-C provides corrosion detection in aluminum alloys with thickness up to 5mm with possibility of building scanned images of corroded zone.

If you want to know really the state of the art, look at the ATA presentations about this technique.
search for aircraft manufacturers presentations and skip the presentations of Institutes (they have no real expereince and tell you mostly phantasy) and skip equipment manufacturers presentations up to that time you know what airlines do and aircraft manufacturers recommend: Equipment sellers advertise! So they can everything if you ask them. But they have no resposibility on aircraft safety in contrast to aircraft manufacturers and airlines.
