UT & RT inspection of butt fusion welds in PVC pipe

We are in the process of starting a research program evaluating butt fused PVC pipe welds. We have located some information already but could use more prior to the start of the project. Is there any information out there that could assist us? Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Fred Raco, Jr.

Re: UT & RT inspection of butt fusion welds in PVC pipe
We have been carrying out research into UT and RT inspection of butt fusion welds in PE pipes for around 15 years and have published many papers on the subject, e.g.

Troughton M J: "Welding with integrated non-destructive examination of polyethylene pipes". Plastics Pipes XI Conference, Munich, Germany, 3-6 September 2001.

Munns I J and Georgiou G A: "Ultrasonic and radiographic NDT of butt fusion welded polyethylene pipes", Insight 41(5), 291.

We are also currently developing new NDT techniques for both butt fusion and electrofusion welds in PE pipes.

PVC pipes are rarely butt fusion welded. They are normally joined using a solvent cement. However, if you are indeed looking to carry out NDT on PVC butt fusion welds, then these papers would be a good starting point.

Re: UT RT inspection of butt fusion welds in PVC pipe
as in Feb 2005 the request for UT of welds in PVC pipe appeared again in this forum, a useful information for all readers:

Active from November 2004 there is a new European Standard:
EN 13100-3
Nondestructive testing of welded joints in thermoplastics semi-finished products -
Part 3: Ultrasonic testing

Kind regards

Re: UT RT inspection of butt fusion welds in PVC pipe
------ Dear sirs
We are a group of employees of National iranian Gas
company(N.IG.C).Polyethylene pipes are used in the gas distribution system
of Iran and we are seeking to provide coupler for electrofusion joints. Our
main problem is joint inspection. Please kindly let us know the answer of the
following questions:

1-what are the inspection methods for electrofusion joints and which
one is preferred?

2-Does NDT "non destructive test"method exist for joint inspection
and if so,what are the equipments and standards and expenses.

3-Does NDT method provide inspection and confirmation the quality
lonely or the DT and NDT should be carried out simultaneously.

Sincerely yours

M.yousefi
