Calculation of velocity of surface waves

Does anybody know the equation for calculating the surface (Rayleigh) wave velocity, given the material properties, modulus of elasticity, poisson's ratio density etc?

I have seen rough calculation as 0.92*ShearVelocity, and a more accurate result using a calculator at www.eng.vt.edu/fluids/msc/jscalc/wscac02.htm but do not know the equations hidden inside it. Any ideas, Don

In ULTRASONIC WAVES IN SOLID MEDIA, Joseph Rose references an approximate solution by Viktorov. The ratio of the surface wave speed to the shear wave speed (Cr/Ct)= (0.87 + 1.12*nu)/(1+nu) where nu is Poisson's ratio. For nu = 0.29 the ratio is 0.92 as you stated.

There is a formula for the calculation of velocity of surface waves given on pg 22 of "The Krautkramer Booklet" (The blue book)It looks like it is the same formula as the one that Paul Meyer offered but it has not presented as a ratio. If you don't have a "blue" book contact your local Krautkramer Rep.
