Ultrasonic Testing of Adhesive Bonds

The product is an automotive suspension component consisting of a torus of rubber molded between and bonded to two
coaxial steel cylinders. Attempts to test the bond via ultrasonics required submersion of the product in water. The result, even if successful, is an unsaleable product. What is needed is a technique for evaluating the bond on prototypes developed to complete FMEA testing prior to full scale production. Any suggestions for an application generally applicable to a range of products of this type would be appreciated.

As you probably know, there are more ways than submersion in water to introduce an ultrasonic coupling techniques.

We have successfully used squirters, bubblers (weepers) - which use minute amounts of water only on the surface, and other elastomer couplants - which are typically used in wheel probes - but can also be fixed - WITHOUT any water couplant (or other gel-like materials) used.

Depending on your inspection requirements (I'm assuming you are looking for the bond between metal and elastomer - but you could possibly be looking at the elastomer consistency itself) there are other factors that might come into play.
