Attenuation measurments to check for hydrogen attack

I am looking for information on carrying out attenuation measurments on a 75mm thick carbon steel vessel before and after heat soak to check for hydrogen dispersement. The vessel has been in use for the past 10 years or so. Any help with details and /or a test procedure would be appreciated.

There are five methods to detect a certain type of hydrogen attack:
1) flaw echo
2) attenuation
3) frequency analysis
4) sound velocity
5) comparison of longitudinal/transverse sound velocities

Jim,

Detection and monitoring is not a simple subject.
First of all you have to define what type of Hydrogen damage can be expected. Is the vessel operating in high temperature / high pressure environment? In this case you could have High Temperature Hydrogen Attack. Is it working at low temperature, you might be looking at one or more types of Hydrogen Induced Cracking. There is not one method that on its own will give you a conclusive answer on whether you do or don't have Hydrogen Damage. Therefore, during the last 15 years we have developed and practiced combinations of techniques, optimised for the situation at hand.
