Using Remote NDE, including External Experts in the Inspection Process, to Enhance Reliability and address Todays NDE Challenges

The "remote NDE expert" technology is already commercialized and in use in aerospace. E.g. Airbus developed already years ago a system under the brand name OMA (Online Maintenance Assistance) distributed now by TESTIA (http://www.testia.com/products/ndt-products/3273-2/). A complementary System for General Industry is the VIOS sold by Bitnamic (https://www.bitnamic.net/en/remote_maintenance_assistance / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YKeqUG4T3Y).
You will find also other systems like Librestream ONSIGHT or Audisoft Frontline Communicator.

Challenge is the proof of full compatibility with traditional NDE, a sophisticated program has to be performed to proof that Remote Expert NDE gives the same POD as the traditional Level II expert NDE on site.

Currently NDE in aerospace is driven in two directions: RED/GREEN Instruments/methods, which can be operated by non NDT Personal
This is e.g. TapTest or Boeing Ramp Damage Checker or the Airbus/Testia DELAM-Tool (http://www.testia.com/products/ndt-products/d-lam-tool/), which is an intelligent PAUT System with internal expert decision software.
Or remote expert NDE, where the decision is made by the remote expert in a “Maintenance Expert Call Center” of the maintenance facility with a possible backup from NDE-Experts of the Airframe OEM. This just-in-time backup is the big improvement in the concept.
Nevertheless if an intelligent RED/GREEN system can be connected additionally to a remote expert, as systems like the DELAM-Tool, staff with no big NDT background can also solve more complex inspection situations with the expert backup.
A challenge in those concepts is IT safety. Using simple solutions via Facebook, WhatsAp, Skype or Teamviewer lack necessary professional safety features in data communication. Even mobile teleconferencing systems like WEBEX mostly are vulnerable in their communication. Also solutions like Librestream Onsight, Audisoft Frontline Communicator or DolphiCam Teamcenter have to be checked with care regarding IT safety, if you cross borders of IT networks (so between Intranet and Internet). Most safe communication might be P2P with Cell Phone Networks.
