New edition of CSA W59 (2018) - changes to UT of welds

CSA has released the 2018 edition of W59 Welded Steel Construction, which includes major changes to the ultrasonic testing of structural welds. These include:

- selection of a variety of probe sizes and frequencies
- use of DAC/TCG for sensitivity calibration
- allowance for manual phased array

These are part of Annex X, which may be used instead of the classic fixed attenuation (FA) techniques in Clause 8.2.

Hi Paul,currently I don't have 2018 edition so I couldn't read it. Annex X can be used only be used with permission of engineer like previous annexes in older editions? Regards

Hi Theo, great question.

I will make reference to the fixed attenuation technique in Clause 8.2 as the “FA technique”, and the new technique in Annex X as the “TCG technique”. That will save me from restating it multiple times below.

The TCG technique applies to manual conventional UT and manual PAUT and does not require engineering approval, but may be used "where agreed upon by the contractor and the welding inspection organization." Keep in mind this applies to *manual* UT/PAUT only, where probe oscillation and rastering is possible in order to maximize indication height. Encoded PAUT and other alternate techniques such as TOFD still require engineering approval as per Clause 8.2.12. Of course, in the long term we would all like encoded PAUT to be commonplace, but going all the way from an approach developed in 1969 to full-on encoded PAUT was inconceivably complex and would be impossible to achieve consensus on. As a result, we elected to develop a TCG approach and adopt manual PAUT as a first step.

I should point out that Annex X contains acceptance criteria modified to work with the TCG technique and provide quality levels consistent with the FA technique. So if you use Annex X, you use the new acceptance criteria. If you use the FA technique, then you keep doing things the way you were doing it before and use Tables 11.3 and 12.5. The acceptance levels in Annex X differ by a few dB from those in 11.3 and 12.5, which is due to the differences between actual attenuation and the linear estimation of 2 dB/inch. There is a white paper available on this published in the AWS Welding Journal in March 2018.

Hi, Paul

I haven't got the CSA W59 (2018), have few questions about the old version.
For the welds less than 8 mm, just tell the client we couldn't do it because there is not acceptance criteraia?

Sometimes we are requested to do SW on pipe welds with W59 because those pipe will be hit into ground as the base of top structure.
How can we scan the circ welds on 16"x 1/2" pipe(Might be smaller size) with the big monster probe as required by W59 , curve the wedge?

I would hazard against using curved wedges with the FA technique as it will complicate the calibration. Besides, on a diameter as large as 16 inches I doubt it would amount to much difference.

Keep in mind that with the alternative in Annex X, you can now use much more appropriate search unit sizes and frequencies. Your application would be a great way to show your client the benefit of the recent changes.

It is available on the CSA webstore, and will eventually make it's way into Techstreet and other sources.
