PA TESTING FOR OIL AND GAS PIPE

hi! has anyone inspected the oil or gas welded pipe which is in service? I want to know that whether oil or gas in the pipe will influence with UT inspection result, especially for the weld root? because according to the theory, liquid oil or gas in the pipe will aborb some acoustic energy, so it will cause the root defect can't be found.

No, you can differentiate the signals. There is no chances of disappearing the signal but lesser the amplitude you cause with. you should compensate the loss of energy by adding some gain. The amount of gain you add depends on the fuel flow inside the pipe which is complex to calculate. Better add some dB based on the usual repeated signal from the active pipe.

thanks,Manoj Kumar P! I want to know more information about the pipe grith welding inspection. do you just use the PA S scan or use the zone discrimination technology
? because most criteria recommend us use the zone discrimination technology. But I thought S scan is practical. could you give me some advise on it? which technology is more reliable? thanks in advance

I inspect these weld regularly. The product is not of great concern, however the extremely thin material will be your greatest difficulty.

The use of one or other technique, depends of the angle of the defects that you are expecting to locate. What is the joint configuration in your case?
