NDT Ultrasonic testing

What is the relation between diameter of probe and Gain dB level in UT Testing? I have got 5MHz probes of size .5" and .25". Testing on same material, .5" probe takes only 26dB at 80% back echo while .25" probe takes 46dB. what must be the reason?

Smaller the dia higher is the beam spread

Hi Lirin,
As you know larger diameter(0.5") probe emits more energy than smaller dia(0.25") probe.
As per Beam spread calculation larger dia (0.5") probe have less beam spread than smaller dia (0.25"), hence there is less energy loss(Attenuation) in larger dia probe.
that's why you are getting 26dB for 0.5" dia probe & 46dB for 0.25" dia probe to make 80% FSH.
