Re-shooting failed welding joint

We have a query, recently in the boiler we had a tube repair (butt joint) done by welder, material CS, Dia 50mm. After RT was done we found porosity in the capping.

Upon grinding the location, the porosity was found and removed and re-welding done.

my question is, do we need to do RT for the repair again?, as per the ASME Sec 1 (for our case) it should be done, but my question is to the experts if they know of code case where this can be waived or any lenience as such?

our concern is that we do not have enough time (process demands!!)

Hi,

thanks for the response, can you share your experience on joint failures due to Porosity? as per my knowledge from reading various articles etc people have gone 3 to 4 times over the prescribed limits in ASME Sec 1 or B31.1 on critical piping without having any issue.

If you need to comply with ASME Sect 1 Volumetric examination of welded butt joints then you will have to radiograph the joint if the unacceptable imperfections were detected by radiography.
There are no alternatives in ASME Sect 1 PW-11.1.

If you don't have to comply with ASME Sect 1 then pick a difference code and in particular AS 4037 allows unacceptable imperfections to be assessed and approved in accordance with AS/NZS 3788, such assessment taking into consideration stress levels, weld joint and material properties and operating environment.
You will need an engineer familiar with these standards who is approved to carry out this analysis in your location and the analysis might take days and the result could be that the imperfections are still unacceptable so it is a risky alternative.
