Ultrasonic test results

Hello,
I am new to this forum and recently started doing ndt. I am doing some UT on mild steel plates being welded by a robot. Plates are 20mm thickness, half v joint with metal backing. All the steel is blasted clean before welding. We are seeing indications in 2 or 3 areas per test piece, about 1500mm long. Indications are at different depths at 9 and 14mm from top. We get signals of -7 and -12dB over 20mm in length. Then the signal drops away again. We are checking with the 60 and 70 degree probes on a GE usm go. It looks like lack of fusion but quite small. We cannot see it with a macro or grinding into it and looking with MPI. Our welders are asking how the robot is not putting in the same parameters the entire length especially as the fit up is tight. Is there a way we can prove the lof is there?

ONE THING FIRST U TELL THAT IS FULL PENETRATION JOINT OR PARTIAL PENETRATION JOINT. IF IT IS PARTIAL PENETRATION MEANS THAT PROBLEM IS COMES AGAIN AND AGAIN . IF U NEED TO RECTIFY THAT PROBLEM U CAN GO FOR BACKGRINDING AND THEN DO DP TEST AND AGAIN U MAKE WELDING ON REVERSE SIDE ... I AM IN THE PROJECT OF CALMBUOY HERE ALSO SOME LIFTING BEAM ARE THERE AS U ALREADY SAID LIKE SAME JOINT CONFIGURATION .... WE ARE DOING LIKE THAT NOW WE DOEST NOT GET ANY INDICATION.(ALSO WAITING FOR EXPERT ANSWERS.....)

Thanks. It is a full penetration joint with metal backing. No root face on the chamfered side. One of my colleagues suggested it could be impurities in the rolled I beam edge making its way into the molten metal during welding and getting trapped, showing up as a lag of fusion during UT. Not sure how to prove, any suggestions?

We cannot change to double v joint type, we can only weld from one side only because of the design

DEAR JOHN THANKS FOR THE REPLY , NO ISSUE U CAN AVOID THAT IMPURITIES PROBLEM ALSO .... U HAVE TO CLEAN THE WELD EACH PASS OF THE WELDING PROVIDE GRINDING AND THEN U FIRST SEE THE WHAT KIND OF WELDING MATERIAL U USED BECOZ SOME OF THEM SEE THE COST WISE SO THEY USE NOT A QUALITY WELDING MATERIAL . AND THEN USE CORRECT VOLTAGE FOR FUSION OF METAL.
