RT vs UT

Dear friends,
We are assessing low alloy high wall thickness steel castings with RT.
The acceptance norms are level III as per ASTM E 186.
At many places due to higher wall thickness SFD are not maintained as standard RT procedure.
The alloy are showing good UT responce.
May I carry out UT with rejection norms as 20% of FSH at the places where proper SFD is not maintained. This is going to be in addition to the RT.
Regards
Ashwani Kumar

As you stated, your inspection is carried out with accepting norm ASTM E186 Level 3. I believe, the norm calls for RT inspection. Therefore you have to follow ASTM E186. Only if the client approuve UT has a method of inspection can you do UT.

If you can't maintain SFD as per procedure, I suggest that you do multiple shots according to wall thickness. You should be able to succeed.
