AWS CWI vs ASNT VT

What is the difference between AWS CWI and ASNT VT?
Obviously the CWI inspects welds but what does Visual ASNT tech inspects?

Hello chubb.

First let me say that I am not AWS certified, but am ASNT. Industry Standards, or Codes, generally dictate which one (or both) is required.

To be brief, CWI is very specialized and takes a a great deal of knowledge in weld related inspections (as you have noted). VT certification may cover a more "broad" range of inspections (including weld) and requires training in each area of inspection. This might include mechanical, piping (internal & external) visual, etc.

Hope this helps!

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) has an agreement with the American Welding Society (AWS) to provide access for AWS Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) and Senior Certified Welding Inspectors (SCWIs) to Visual Testing (VT) certification under the provisions of the ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP). The purpose of this agreement is to facilitate companies’ and individuals’ compliance with current and anticipated personnel qualification requirements for Visual Testing.

ACCP provides visual testing certification in accordance with ASNT Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A. It is the most widely referenced NDT program document and is widely specified in codes and standards, most notably by ASME. As a result of this broad recognition, the ACCP certificate provides its holder with access to work in accordance with many generally required codes and standards.
