DR vs Conventional Industrial Radiography

Dear Sir,
Please I will appreciate if anyone can give me an illustrative case on the difference between conventional radiography and Digital radiography in the following areas
Calculating space requirement and
Time to complete a job
I will appreciate also if you can explain how we can conduct DR in parallel to production weld. How is the dosage kept low and how is small area closures achieve?
Thanks in anticipation

Best will be to contact the DR company. And are you doing DR or CR

Hi Mr. Adafe

In fact, digital radiography differs from conventional radiography only in the way of storing the obtained image. Digital radiography can be obtained using the direct DR method or indirect using the CR method. The advantage of the CR method is that it is less expensive and the screen (IP) can be curved for radiographs of curved surfaces such as tubes. Regarding radiological protection, there is no difference.
I think is a good idea to contact the supplier in order to obtain details about the software that you are using.

The difference in dose and shielding requirements between Digital Radiography and Film radiography can be huge!
Of course, if you use still the same radiation source with digital radiography than with film radiography, then there is no basic difference with digital beside a slightly shorter exposure time compared with film. BUT, if you use with digital a modern radiation source with a much smaller focal spot (and follopwingly also a lower dopse power) than the old X-ray tubes with mms of focal spot, than you will gain a lot (lower source objectdistance, lower dose poer and finally lower radiation protection requirements). Thisa was proven in the past for mobil applications when replacing Ir-192 and film by Se-75 and digital, see the literature.

oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field
