Infrared Imaging Under Paint

Thank you in advance for any input/guidance provided. I look forward to our discussion and value the expertise of NDT professionals.

In short, I require help in identifying customers (& penetrable market) for a unique IR NDT tool our small business developed in partnership with US NAVAIR.

Features of the tool:
- field deployable (battery operated, mil-spec designed, extreme weather tolerant, minimal training required)
- 50 mm x 50 mm (2"x2") field of view (can re-design up to 6"x6"
- scanning or still image acquisition
- can detect sub-coating features (ex. corrosion) underneath specific industrial paints at OEM specification (<25 mil approx.)

Ideas thus far:
- CUI (field girth weld)
- airframe b/c minimal thickness (too many FAA regulation)

Are there any NDT professionals out there that can identify an application for us to pursue for our device? Thank you.

FYI: Laser & Plasma Technologies

Important addition: It is NOT thermography but a photodetector.

Thank you very much for the reply. Unfortunately, I am told (my boss) that any additional details are proprietary. So in summary we have a portable (ergonomic, battery powered, 50 mm x 50 mm) NDT tool that can image underneath select industrial coatings thereby detecting corrosion very early as well as avoid the cost to remove paint. The device is shown on the website.

I think our proprietary necessity is based on the fact that we are a very small company (3 people, at one point was 8)

Lastly, if there are any ideas about application, would certainly like to learn. Thank you.

Thank you Barry for including the SBIR citation.

Status: + feedback by a large coating company stating it has the potential to "substantially change R & D corrosion work flow"

Next iteration (require funding): optical filtering + dedicated software for image processing + onboard digital display + wireless data transmission

Risks: time to market
