An Excel template was provided in July 2016 to the NDT.net forum (https://www.ndt.net/forum/thread.php?msgID=64178), a User Guide, 3 data files and a short explanation of how the data files are used. Ben Turnbull and Ed Ginzel have put this material together for those interested in doing acoustic materials characterisation. The authors call the Template MAPAS (Materials Acoustic Properties Analysis Software). It allows the user to import A-scan files (in txt or csv format) and then run FFT analyses on the A-scans and calculate velocities, attenuation and a variety of the modulli typically determined from the velocities and density of materials (using the equations found in several places including the old ONDT Technical Notes). Many researchers would probably use their own software developed in something like Matlab; however, we thought that this Excel-based template would open the opportunities to many others because Excel is so commonly available. The FFT computations in Excel can be slow (most of my computations ran about 2-4 minutes for each FFT), but the results are very acceptable. The authors make no guarantee as to the accuracy of the software. It is provided “as is”. The template has pages that are “protected” but these can be unprotected in the Review tab of Excel. The protection is primarily to prevent corruption of the Data and Spectrum master worksheets.
