ICE Eschede Accident in ZDF-TV Today: Die Todesfahrt des ICE 884

A report will be broadcasted via ZDF-TV at May 6., 20:15 - 21:25.
More background of the broken wheel will be presented with a main focus
on the question "was it possible to prevent this accident",
according to a ZDF-TV preview [1][2].
Obviously it will not be very technical, but in respect to responsibility
and ethics of NDT, it's may be worthwhile to see it.

I was contacted a lot during the days after the accident in May 1998 from
a ZDF-TV journalist, however, so far no information had been broadcasted.
Only Focus-TV broadcasted our interview /news/1998/bahn_tv.htm.
In one of my former comments I suspected that ZDF-TV was manipulated by
the railway lobby [2].
It will be interesting to see today if now objective information will be shown.

In a coincidence of this topic some railway news are part of this month's issue,
e.g. "Continuing Railway Accidents Show the Importance of NDT".

Re: ICE Eschede Accident in ZDF-TV Today: Die Todesfahrt des ICE 884
I would like to inform you about the essential findings the TV report mentioned.

- With a wrong construction of the traveling gear (axle) the problems started.
- Mono-block wheels have been replaced in an early stage because of to much vibrations.
- The new wheel with a ring and rubber attachment was a safety risk.
- The Deutsche Bahn knew about the safety risk (inner surface fatigue cracks),
however did not applied appropriated in-service inspections e.g. ultrasonic testing.

The report did NOT mentioned that the DB recognized the weakness of its in-service inspection,
however, developed a wrong concept (ultrasonic surface wave method).
