UT Thickness Verification Old Piping - Equipment Needs

Looking for an inexpensive gage, don't need all the bells
and whistles, just good performance at a reasonable cost.
Will need to verify remaining wall thickness of piping
that has been in service for a number of years - have no way
to know the as-is condition until we go into a shutdown.

Also want to use this gage for material thickness verifications
of newer fabrications - in good condition.

Any leads would be appreciated.

I think, we can offer you such gage, Please see info on our page (http://www.optel.com.pl/manual/english/osc2.htm).

Soon we will have a portable device (but it must be connected to a
computer - notebook for example).

Panametrics is one of the several worldwide companies that offer hand-held ultrasonic gages for measurement of remaining wall thickness. The Model 26MG is our simplest (and least expensive) standard model. You can find details on our web site at

Why don’t you rent a thickness meter (see www.ashtead-technology.com)as in this way you benefit.

 No compromise on performance against initial cost.
 No ongoing Calibration or Maintenance Costs.
 No large capital outlay.
 Simply return and upgrade whenever you require a differently specified model or if you want to evaluate different models.
 No Depreciation costs.
 Wide range of models available.

Systems are available at competitive rates for short or long term rental. All equipment supplied ready for use.

I would just like to express a word of caution here.
Obviously it depends upon the type of piping you need to
inspect: a simple waste water line might not need
the same stringent inspection as a high pressure hydrogen
line. Also, I could imagine an operator with little training
doing incoming goods checks with a simple thickness gauge,
but on used piping, where you do not know what to expect
I would recommend to use fully trained and qualified personnel
to be used for the inspection. A cheap solution might turn out
very expensive if you think of the possible risk involved.
Another side to it is that it might be a good idea to look
at the welds as well as the piping itself. Many times it has
happened before that root corrosion/erosion of welds in piping
was the cause of extended shutdowns cause by replacement and
repair of piping being needed.
I would recommend, obviously dependant upon your actual
needs(type of piping, application etc.) to get some advise from a qualified and certified
NDE company. It might cost you a little money now, but it
could save you a lot. Obviously if you wis to discuss this
in a bit more detail, I would gladly speak to you (free of charge!)

I agree with Jan Verkooijen, you have not presented enough data to make
any determination. A simple thickness gage can lead to misinterpretations.
For determinations of hoop stress you need length, width and depth. What kind of sampling
are you proposing? What materials are being transported? With a simple hand held instrument
using a good sampling technique, what are the odds of finding a critical flaw on your surface area?
You may want to go to an instrumented pig for 100% coverage or computer controled
external scanning (if the surface is good).

I have about 15 years in piping and e/c and there is not a simple answer, nor, typically, a
single piece of equipment which will resolve your problem. I have had pipe rupture between sampling
points (egg in the face). You need to resolve your risk tolerance, not just the inspection equipment issue.
