UT Flaw detection in Monel and Hastelloy weldments

Interested to know of any UT Techniques for Monel or Hastelloy weldments which would give a reasonable POD for preferential ID corrosion loss to Weld or HAZ in piping.

Kind Regards Charlie

Try using Refracted Longitudinal search units.

The corrosion of this type can be put into three categories, notch, U type or escarpment, two can be detected relatively easily by a 45 degree shear either 0.5 skip or multiple skip paying attention to the particular area of impingement or beam path length. The escarpment type of geometry is more difficult as it is shallow from the pipe side gradually getting deeper nearer the weld or HAZ. Try using 4.0 MHz shear or if the material is partcularly noisy angled compression as Charlie recommends.

Re: UT Flaw detection in Monel and Hastelloy weldments
IS this just corrosion or is ID cracking a concern.

Refracted Longitudinal Waves may work and even ID Creeping Waves.

Phased Array UT is another consideration. Either a E Scan or a S-Scan could image the sorroded area.

Is there any weld crown restriction?

How thick is the Hastelloy and Monel material?
