weld testing bulkhead / deck penetrations

A bulkhead penetration is basically a pipe passing through a steel ship's bulkhead. Once the pipe is welded and the weld is tested for watertightness (not for structural integrety), an electrical cable can then be passed through the penetration. Currently, two mechanics are required to test the penetration. One mechanic routes an air hose to one side while the other carries a bucket of soap suds with a brush to the other side of the bulkhead. Air is applied on one side and the other mechanic applies the soap and looks for bubbles. This is a two man operation which take a lot of time. Does anyone know of a simple (shipyard mechanic simple) means of testing a weld on one side of a bulkhead for watertight integrety (looking for holes in the welds only? The penetrations are normally 1 to 3 inches in diameter.

Re: weld testing bulkhead / deck penetrations
We have successfully tested penetrations using UE Systems ultrasonic leak testing equipment. We would place an ultrasonic tone generator on one side and scan for leakage on the other side. Several penetrations can be tested at one time using this method.

We verified the process by making several mockups with pinhole leaks. Of course the testing is done prior to coating.

Re: weld testing bulkhead / deck penetrations
A bulkhead can be tested for full penetration by Ultrasonic will be more approprite. RT can tell only any volumemetric defect. Using the approprite transuducer angle it will be possible to ensure the penetration.

Sonatest has just launched the 'SoundScan' system for this application. It has been proven on shipboard, aviation, military and orbital applications for leak detection.
