NDE of Pressure Tank

We are interested in detecting dis-bonds in a pressurant tank
constructed as follows;

7 mil aluminum liner
One layer of film adhesive
5 mil overwrap of graphite/epoxy tape

Access to the inside of the tank is not possible.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I think we can help you, I need a replica of the part to
work out if the equipment is capable of detect such thickness

: Dear Bill,
: with a little bit of luck and the moon in right
: position, you may already have all the equipment
: necessary,to perform this inspection.
: I suggest the air-coupled plate wave ( pitch/catch)
: technique. With graphite epoxy tape of 0.005"
: or 0.125 mm, it could be dangerous, to use water
: as a couplant.
: I will call you on Wednesday morning.

One method that may be considered, especially if liquid coupling could be a problem, is to heat external surface with either with a radiant or a convections source, such as a hairdryer, and then watch the surface cool, using an ir camera. Hot spots will appear if there is a disbond interfering with energy moving to the aluminum liner.

To determine whether the disbond is within the overlap, or at adhesive film, you would probably have to follow-up by some other means, such as ultrasound, or a far more sophisticated (ie, expensive) thermographical system.
