Steel - Rubber debond testing method?

I am looking for a methodology that is capable of detecting bonding/adhesive failures between a rubber type compound and heavy steel plating, and determine if off-the-shelf testing equipment is available.
The steel-side surface is mostly inaccessible. Testing must either be done from the rubber surface, or from very limited locations on the steel-side surface.
The rubber compound is approximately 2" thick and cannot be penetrated by ultrasound, at any frequency.
Critical size of debond has not been determined.

In other situations where the rubber is thinner and more transmissive to ultrasound, we usually recommend a phase shift test using any common flaw detector and an appropriate transducer, but you indicate that won't work here due to extreme attenuation. Alternately, if testing from the points where you do have access to the steel is useful, it should be possible to evaluate the steel/rubber bond from the steel side using the ringdown technique described in the attached application note.

Hello all,

My employer, GE Inspection has a system used for this application in rubber covered rolls. It operates by the principle of heating the metal from the rubber, inductively, and monitoring the transferred heat to the rubber. Lack of thermal transfer indicates a lack of bond. If you are interested in it I will give you the correct contacts for further information.

You might try a sub sonic method. Determine the natural frequency of a bonded portion of the rubber using a shaker. Then measure the natural frequency of a debonded portion. If there is a significant difference then a scan of the surface to measure the frequency response will provide an indication of debonding. You will of course have to develop your own transducer but it shouldn't be to difficult to adapt a small electric motor with offset mass and an accelerometer into a simple hand held monitor. Maybe a roller ball to ease the job of scanning across large areas. Perhaps an electro magnet driven at the appropriate frequency(s) the variation in its behaviour over bonded and unbonded rubber indicating areas of concern.
