Hi all,
I'm evaluating a series of stainless steel pipes and is wondering what are the practicle evaluation method (NDE) to assess pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in S/S pipes?

Can you please give more info the type of SS pipes. Looking at diameter, wall thickness and type of SS. Also where the pipe is being used.

But some some considerations:

What is the carbon content.

What is the grain size.

Is this cast SS materials.

Is this SA 347 SS?

Generally, Refarcted L-waves are th best for examining SS materials. The desired frequency will depend upon grain size.

Re: NDT of stainless steel pipes What amount of SS pipe? Is this corrosion you are already aware of (you say assess) or are you seeking to determine IF there is any corrosion in a system? Bear in mind also that ultrasonics of forged SS pipe and of SS weldments have different parameters - equiaxed grains for forged, columnar grains for weld deposit.

If akready detected corrosion then what is its location - if its root erosion or HAZ attack then can you detect it without traversing through the weld deposit? If not then refracted longitudinal twin-crystal will be least "bent" by the columnar grains, if remote from welds then zero degree compression wave thickness inspection for corrosion pitting and bimodal for SCC.

If the second case, then have your corrosion engineer do a risk assessment along with the process and operating engineers. Take into account any possible "upsets".

Use an RBI methodology to spend effort on those areas most susceptible and of highest impact if failure occurs.
