Dear Friends,
What is the minimum effective thickness for UT of welding in pressure vessel by Angle probe (single crystal) and common portable flaw detector?

Re: Minimum Thickness for UT
Please refer ASME Section V, Article-4 and 5.

Practically I limit myself to 10mm as a minimum thickness and I prefer to use 80 degree shear wave probe along with usual 70 degree probe for 10mm thickness.

AWS D1.1 states 8 mm as a minimum thickness and any weld less than that may be tested using specific test procedure established using sufficient number or mock-up welds of same thickness containing anticipated type of defects at various depths.

Regards,

Re: Minimum Thickness for UT
Dear Mr.Amiri,
From 8mm you can do UT by angle probe with single crystal.

Re: Minimum Thickness for UT
Gents,
UT - Make your equipment and your mind equipped before carrying out UT on particular job.
Quantify yourself whether your equipment & setup is capable to test the minimum requirements. for that u have to use calibration blocks, refernce blocks (with refernce to your job u r going to test), make a 1:1 diagram, equip your mind...
now it is practically possible to go for minimum thicknes and even complex geometry UT inspection.

Dear Friends,
Let me know If the welding is fully penitration in 5mm thickness & inspection test plan from client is 100% UT.what is the procedure??? Is MPI enough???..

FMC/TFM

Next generation for Phased Array UT is here now with FMC/TFM! Have higher resolution imaging, impr

oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field
