Point - Cloud Scanning for Craftsmanship

(I am a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering at RIT)

I am currently researching methods of using laser scanning or
computed tomography to evaulate the craftsmanship of products
such as automobiles.

I have found plenty of information on algorithms to reconstruct
surfaces from point cloud data. I have also found many vendors
who can create CAD models based on this data. What I am still
looking for is papers or other sources that show how these
techniques cab be used to measure the overall quality of a product.
For example, the fit of two automobile panels, consistency of surface
finish, and tolerances in assembled parts.

if anyone knows of any researchers, companies, or papers that
might have information on this, please email me at p75j@hotmail.com.

Thanks,
P. Jansky
