The Future of NDT

At our aerospace company some research is currently being done on the future of NDT. We are trying to find out what the people in the field think will be the methods of the future. To do this we have composed a questionnaire. If you would like to help, send an E-mail to H.J.Komduur@student.tudelft.nl and we'll send you a copy of our questionnaire.

Thanks in advance,
H.J. Komduur

Re: The Future of NDT

Franc,

For thoughts regarding the future of NDE you may want to see the following article "Emerging NDE Technologies and Challenges at the Beginning of the 3rd Millennium" Part I and Part II.
This two part article was published in the Material Evaluation as follow:
Material Evaluation, Vol. 58, No. 1, January 2000, pp. 17-30.
Material Evaluation, Vol. 58, No. 2, February 2000, pp. 141-150.

Re: The Future of NDT Since the email link for this subject doesn't work, let me make some observations:

I started in NDT in 1958. UT was in its infancy and was used for thickness gauging and lamination inspection primarily.

1.MPI I used a hand held yoke and put dry powder on the welds and blew it off.
2002 I use a hand held yoke and spray paint and ink on the weld. Better sensivity but lower production.

2.I used three cans of chemicals for PT testing
2002 I use three cans of chemicals for PT Testing

3. I used Iridium 192, Kodak AA film, processed for 8 minutes @ 68°F.
2002 We use Iridium, same exposure speed film, process for 8 minutes @ 68° F.

UT flaw detection didnt really take off until the mid '60's. By 1970, flaw detectors with AGC cirsuits were available for field use. You held the scope in one hand and scrubbed the probe back and forth with the other. 98% of the accuracy of the test depended on technicians skill.
2002 The only major difference is that the scope does your math for you. Still relieson technicians skill.

Granted, in the more esoteric areas there have been many major improvements, Especially in UT, However, the garden variety everyday NDT has not advance to an noticalble degree in the past 30-40+ years.

But, what about welding? How long have 7018 rods been in production? Some things change very little in everyday applications.
