Queries on Ultrasonic Testing

Dear Friends,

I have two queries as below and would really appreciate some detailed feedback, which would be helpful to us.

(1) A FBH reflects reflects differently to a logitudinally drilled hole. In Automated Bar Testing (Forge Quality Bar Stock/Bearing Quality Steels etc), we use axially drilled holes to judge the dynamic capability of the ultrasonic testing systems. The fault size in FBH is reached by increasing the testing sensitivity by a calculated factor. How is this factor arrived at? How should we co-relate that a particular size FBH reflection will be equivalent to so & so size of drill hole?

(2) Can anyone share with us the data or standards information about class AA MIL STD-2154 which is 2/64” FBDH. This is used for aircraft double Vac Arc quality. Does this standard call for manual test or automated testing?

I do not have a copy of the MIL standard 2154 so cannot speak to that item.
However, equivalent responses have been reasonably well explained by Prof. I.N. Ermolov. You can go to the article at http://www.ndt.net/article/v07n01/ginzel/ginzel.htm where you will find a utility to compare how a FBH compares to a SDH.

Please check the KTA references from http://www.kta-gs.de/e/standards/3200/3201_1e.pdf annex B2.3 b) for the conversion of side drilled hole(Dz) to circular disk reflector (Dksr) used for manual examinations.

The MIL STD-2154 is now cancelled and replaced with ASTM 2375. Please check http://69.7.224.88/viewnews.aspx?newsID=990
