Crack detection in pipe

I need to find a solution to find and “size” small cracks in pipes.

The cracks are oriented parallel to weld, are located ID and could be as small as less than 0.5 mm and are in the HAZ. The material is a standard carbon steel pipe 3/8” (almost brand new) diameter 8” or 10”. We shall inspect in service, and then we only have access from the OD side. There is no coating, but as the cracks are located in a double-elbow (“S” shape) room for scanner or probe is restricted.

We have some suggestions for you. Use back diffraction to start; you can get down close to 0.5 mm.

The ID creeping wave approach is also good for detecting (and siZing) small defects.

You can do both techniques with an OmniScan.
