Need information on AE
To all NDT intellecutals,
This is Pramod Myakal from India, I would like to have a comparative statement between tank floor inspection by MFL and acostic emission of tank bottoms. In the association to the subject I would like to ask the following questions :-
Up to what extent MFL method be replace by Acostic Emission for tank bottoms? why?
What are the adv. and disadv. of using AE for tank bottoms, by keeping in view MFL inspection.
Please send me your kind suggestios for email@example.com

Re: Need information on AE The question needs to re phrased as AE Condition Assessment of Tank Floors and MFL Floorscanning are not directly competing technologies. They are correct technologies to use during different phases of the life cycle of an AST.
When you have removed an AST from service and spent considerable sums on cleaning and preparing for inspection an MFL Floorscan (or similar) should be conducted to define remining thickness and identify areas for repair.
The AE technique is an on-line Condition Assessment of the tankfloor before the decision is made to remove the tank from service. In this manner tanks can be assessed and screened and only tanks which need to be shut down are taken out of service. This can result in substantial cost savings to a tank operator as results with numerous operators around the world have shown that statistically only 40-50% of tanks removed from service on a 10 year interval actual require substantive repairs. The AE test as indicated is conducted when the tank is in service, is non intrusive and therefore does not invlolve tank entry and gives an overview of the whole floor.
The storage tank codes such as API 653 and EEMUA 159 now recognise that other Risk Based techniques (RBI, AE testing) can be used to determine the shutdown interval of an AST rather than relying on fixed interval shutdowns.
The drawback is that you need a qualified an experienced company to perform the AE testing who have independently verified database experience.
For more information you should look at the Shell Netherlands Paper from ECNDT at http://www.ndt.net/article/ecndt98/chemical/095/095.htm

Tankfloor inspection sensitivity To, all the concerned
I would like to know under what cercumstances 2mm dia hole will be picked up by mfl system (Tank floor)as an isolated pit opened to hole.
what would be the probe array system that will detect this
Pl send your answars to
Conformable wedge transducer
The conformability is obtained with a flexible membrane filled with water between the transducer and
the inspected component. The coupling between the membrane and the component requires a small quantity of water or couplant. The conformable wedge combines the acoustic performance of immersion technique with good coupling and low attenuation.
