API-510 Pressure vessels inspection frequency

Hello,
I am working on a Gas gathering platform offshore. We need to know the frequency of the pressel vessels inspection, internal visual...As per API 510, what is the frequency of a vessel to be inspected which is 2 and half years old?Someone please advise. Is it once in 5 years? We have a shut down coming and planning has to be done.

Re: API-510 Pressure vessels inspection frequency
See excerpt below. I would perform UT thickness to determine corrosion rate and establish appropriate frequency in accordance with applicable jurisdictional authority. If T/A timing allows, it would likely be advisable to conduct internal insp on inlet and any sour service vessels as a minimum in conjunction with a full corrosion survey of vessels and associated piping.

Good luck,

RB.

INTERNAL AND ON-STREAM INSPECTION
The period between internal or on-stream inspections shall
not exceed one half the estimated remaining life of the vessel
based on corrosion rate or 10 years, whichever is less. In
cases where the remaining safe operating life is estimated to
be less than 4 years, the inspection interval may be the full
remaining safe operating life up to a maximum of 2 years.

Re: API-510 Pressure vessels inspection frequency
There is no simple answer to this question and I recommend you study API closely. The first issue is whether there is any jursidictional rules that will override API 510. The law comes first. Then there are options within 510 as to whether you plan using Risk based Inspection or Time Based Maximum Intervals as shown in API 510.
The time based intervals in 510 state that you must do an inspection at time of installation and when the vessel changes service or ownership. An external inspection on an interval not exceeding 5 years. Internal inspections not exceeding half the remaining life or ten yeras. The internal may be replaced by an on-steam inspection if the criteria of Para 6.5.2.1 are met.

And of course an RBI program may increase or decrease these intervals depending upon the analysis.

Re: API-510 Pressure vessels inspection frequency
In addition to API 510, if your vessel is in US waters note that US Code of Federal Regulations, 2007 “Shipping” 46 CFR Subpart 61.10-5 “Pressure vessels in service”
• basically for vessels with annual COI’s all pressure vessels listed on the COI shall be examined or tested every 5 years. This includes an external and internal examination however it does get specific on what is required by the external examination and I believe its up to the attending surveyor. If the vessel is equipped with a manhole or inspection port it must be opened and an internal examination also conducted. No hydrostatic test is required unless a defect is found that, in the marine inspectors opinion, may affect the safety of the pressure vessel.

Also note the class rules for which your vessel falls under but if its ABS then it will also require the same inspection on a 5 yr interval.
