Note that B31 Case 181 is much more than just alternative acceptance criteria - a whole bunch of requirements should be met, including the capability of the system should be demonstrated and accurate defect measurements must be made. Use of Case 181 has to be considered and prepared for at the design stage - I have witnessed many occasions when most of the requirements were not taken into consideration. Good luck in using it properly.

Thanks Nigel You're absolutely correct. Its just that if he is working to ASME he neeeds to use b31 Case 181. If he is working to a European or British Standard then the standard Udo mentioned would probably apply.
