Maximum penetration of Ir-192 in steel

Hi,
We are using Ir-192 to examine the casting quality of a steel part with maximum thickness 95.25mm:
(1) Is Ir-192 OK for this application?
(2) Does the decay influence the maximum penetration thickness?

This would be working at the upper practical limit of Ir192. The energy levels would remain the same with decay. However, with loss of activity comes increased shot time and at 3in. of steel it would be impractical for normal use. Better to use higher energy x-ray or cobalt60 gamma.

If 95mm is the maximum thickness, but you have thinner sections, you could probably gain valuable information about the part using Ir192, however, if you are looking to get a good density reading at the thickest portion of the casting you probably will not get it with this source.

you can use Ir 192 in conjunction with two Films how will
exposure at once. Than you need the half time for your right density .For the interpretation use the films lying upon each other.
