Helium Leak Test

A customer wants "High pressure helium test of valve body at 5725 psi (400 bar-approx). Test Duration: 10 minutes; No leakage permitted". The valves are required for hydrogen service.

We would like to know the following:

1. Is it required to do helium leak test at such a high pressure?

2. Is it technically correct to do leak test at above pressure (with respect to sensitivity)

3. Any advantages of doing such high pressure test?

4. Any alternate method for achieving the object of detecting any leak path?

5. Any international standard recommending correct procedure of helium leak test with pressurisatio method?

6. Is there any limitation on pressure with helium as test media.

Re: Helium Leak Test
Since the system is meant for hydrogen service (very light gas)and other methods may not detect for small leaks, owner may be insisting for helium leak test. However, generally helium leak test by detector probe technique (pressurisation method)will not be much sensitive. Best results can be achived by (tracer probe technique) vacuum testing using helium mass spectrometer.
