Low kv, pulsed x-ray source

We are hoping to use portable digital x-ray systems, such as those used to locate explosives in luggage, to find entrapped water in aircraft honeycomb structures.

The main problem is that these systems typically use the Golden Engineering 160kv pulsed source, which requires a lot of water in aluminum or composite skinned structures, to cast a shadow. Thus we are seeking much lower kv source, ideally 55 to 75kv.

We are aware that this is the range of medical and dental equipment, but thus far we have not located a stand-alone system that could be readily adapted to our needs.

Besides the above mentioned kilovolt range, we are looking for characteristics similar to that of the Golden Engineering System, that is, lightweight (< 10kg), and, ideally, relatively inexpensive and able to be battery-powered.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Norm,
The problem you describe with using the Golder Engineering pulse source has more to do with the imaging technology you are using than on the energy source.
Our latest digital X-ray system is completely battery operated and uses the Golden source to produce excellent (2-1T, >10 lp/mm) instant images from the thinest of materials up to .4" steel.

I happen to know that Vidisco Ltd. of Israel have developed a real time system that has been approved by boeing and is being used by theIsrael Aircraft Industry for just this purpose. In fact, if I am not mistaken, they have an example image on their website. www.vidisco.com (If not then try .co.il.)

Nuetron radiography is excells for imaging water in aircraft structures. There is a facility (currently under utilized) dedicated to this at the former McClellan AFB in Sacremento.
