Many Holes Inspection Problem

We need an inspection method to look fo scores inside 5/8" diameter holes. The holes are in plates about 2" thick and the scores are along the length of the hole.
Does not sound too tough yet does it?

The crunch is there are 16000 + holes on each plate and there are over 50 plates.

Current method is manual hole by hole with back lighting.
We have tried a video camera that actually shows the scores holes quite well but the lighting can make a bad hole look good.
We have contacted the "Vision Technical types" but they say we cannot recognize these scores with their systems.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Are the scores along the full length of each hole?
A plug gauge incorporating a rotating surface measurement stylus may provide a means to recognize such a score.

You will still have to position the gauge manually unless it can be done as part of the machining process when the holes are formed.

Can you shed a little more light on the problem. Is this plate in a fixed location? What is it? Where is it?

NO. The scores may start and Stop within the hole. They are caused by the broaching operation. The scores are actually on the 3 lands that are formed by the broaching process.

The plates are all loose and are in a manufacturing shop. They are about 10' diameter

I remember about 20 years ago having a similar problem during broaching of gearbox components. We played with surface profiling, eddy current etc.

As in the end all we wanted to do was identify good and bad we went for cheap and cheerful. Lay the plates against a solid backing pour molten wax into each hole (as is used in wax casting process) leave to cool. Push out and look for the gooving on the wax slug, mark off good versus bad holes. You can probably do a pour of 500-600 holes in30 minutes, push out and inspect one hole every 3 minutes. Wax slugs you recycle back into the melt.

This may be too expensive - but we make non-contact, laser-based scanners. They can generate a profile image as well as a video-like image. We find that scratches and score marks tend to show up very well with the video image. This is not a bore scope devise.

If this will be an ongoing process the probe could be positioned like a drill tool and rapidly run in-and-out of each hole.
