Protective Coatings for Ultrasonic Test Blocks and Reference Standards
Hello Fellow NDT Professionals,
Has anyone had experience with the use of protective coatings applied to UT blocks, other than the normal nickel plating of steel blocks and clear anodizing of aluminum blocks? PH Tool manufactures test blocks and currently has the "traditional" coatings applied to our blocks after manufacture. The problem we have been encountering is working with outside plating/anodizing shops who can physically handle the products in an appropriate manner without dropping, nicking, or damaging the blocks. Test blocks are difficult to rack since there can be no additional holes introduced for suspending the item in the tank during pre-cleaning/coating/rinsing/drying. We would like to explore the use of alternative coatings or processes but would first like to hear from the end-users of test blocks regarding what may be acceptable. Have other coatings been used?
Also, if anyone can suggest a "high-quality, low-volume" plating and anodizing shop, we would be very appreciative. Location is not critical as these items can be shipped for processing.
