 | 01:55 Feb-21-2001 Re: Guided Ultrasonics TWI has developed Teletest, a long-range guided wave UT system for inspecting pipe. TWIs subsidiary, Plant Integrity Ltd markets the system. It was developed for detecting corrosion under insulation, but is finding wider application to pipes in road crossings, buried pipe, jetty lines, etc. Range is typically 30m from the transducer location in either direction. Up to 175m has been achieved. 100% of the pipe wall is inspected. The system can reliably detect metal loss flaws representing 9% of the total cross sectional area of the pipe. It can also distinguish between corrosion and other pipe features, particularly welds.Contact details are: - Plant Integrity Ltd Granta Park Great Abington Cambridge CB1 6AL UK Tel +(44) 1223 893994 Fax +(44) 1223 893944

We have a great deal of experience in guided wave testing at Physical Acoustics Corp. We are currently under contract for two companies to develop Guided Wave technology for inspecting heat exchanger tubes. Under these contracts we are developing better ways to detect corrosion in carbon steel and thermal cracks in Inconel. If you would like to reply to my email I can supply you with more details. | 07:59 Feb-21-2001 Re: Guided Ultrasonics Please be more specific about the application. there are so many references in this particular field. The technology is a 'hot topic' presently due to the number of companies promoting Guided or Long Range Ultrasonics for fast screening of either above ground or buried piping.Be careful because there is a great degree of what can and cannot be accomplished with the varying commercial flavours of this technology. This has been identified by a series of evaluations most of which are not as yet truely in the public domain. On piping - internal & external coatings, internal liquids, geometric configuration, size and type of surrounding medium (if buried) all play a significant part in how far signals will travel in the pipe itself. Also the technique is generally sensitive to a change in cross sectional area which can mean you need a quite substantial wall loss before you can discriminate defects. It is a screening technology with a lot of plus factors but also a number of limitations. Insight from theBritish Institute Of NDT has covered a number of papers in their February 2001 issue. Be cautious as they are all from commercial exponents of the technology so be prepared to dissect the reported data and develop your own questions.

The development has been carried out by the original researchers of the technique who have worked with it for approximately 10 years. The main differences in this second generation equipment is that it mainly uses torsional mode which is not affected by liquid in fully filled pipes. it needs 33 percent fewer transducers and can operate at lower frequencies as it transmits a non-dispersive wave mode. This equipment, Wavemaker SE16 is totally portable, and battery powered. The software is totally integrated and allows automatic data collection and integraded report generation. After comprehensive trials GUL Wavemaker SE16 equipment is now accepted by the major plant operators as the industry standard and is in commercial use worldwide. More information is available on our website.

ISAFE3 Intrinsically Safe Sensor System ISAFE3 intrinsically safe sensor system of Vallen Systeme is especially targeted at the petrochemica ... l - as well as oil and gas transportation industry. The sensor system is designed for permanent monitoring or periodic inspection tasks. Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications.
The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation.
ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.
