July Issue:: Forum introduction

This Month's Introduction

As usual, this month's issue will focus on our discussion theme.
If you are interested in other nondestructive testing topics, don't
hesitate to discuss them in this forum as well.

You may have noticed the new forum name "NDT.net Forum",
expanding the former UTonline forum to include the complete range of
NDT methods. If the discussion gets too crowded (we hope!) we'll open
more Forums for each NDT topic - obviously ultrasonic testing
as one of the major NDT methods would the first!

The NDT community, especially in Germany, was shocked by the train
accident in Eschede on June 3, 1998. It was all too clear that NDT
techniques had not been applied effectively. The theme is so important
that we continue our focus on Railway Testing - learning from failure!
Another big part of this issue highlighting
"The Reliability of NDT techniques and procedure of validation".
Last but not least we are pleased to present many other papers in this
issue - please access those via the front page.

Sensors are available for different AE-frequency ranges optimized for corrosion and fatigue crack detection and other applications. The ISAFE 3 sensor system consists of an AE-sensor (model ISAS3) certified according to ATEX/IEC for installation in zone 0, gas group IIC, IP68, 20 to +60 °C, and a signal isolator (model SISO3) certified for installation in zone 2. An ISAS3 sensor can be mounted in atmosphere or submerged, e.g. in water or crude oil. It is supported by mounting tools for temporary (magnets) or permanent (welded) installation. ISAFE3 supports automatic sensor coupling test and can be used with any AE signal processor supporting 28V supply at 90 mA peak, e.g. Vallen Systeme ASIP-2/A.
