ammonia converter inspection

We have an ammonia converter which consists of a multilayer
shell welded circumferentially to carbon steel top and bottom
heads. The number od layes is appx 10, each 1/4 " thick.
We are concerned of possible damage in one of the layers.
Does anyone know of an efficient NDT method to inspect the
multilayer shell? Our main concern is in the area near the
shell heads welds. We would like to know if anyone has
experience using acoustic emission as a volume inspection in
one of these converters. We have thought of AE since there are
many hard to reach areas employing other techniques such as UT.
However, we fear that the noise generated by
the friction between layers while pressurizing the vessel
may mask the real signal. Also, I would be interested in hearing
of any experience with these components related either with NDT
or with failure mechanisms

.The ability to examine multi-layer reactor vessels including head to shell and shell to shell welds has been proven through lab and field trials. Field inspections on a variety of ammonia and urea reactors with the same weld configurations have been carried out. The methods employed are TOFD. Dear Humberto,
We have been involvedin inspection of multi layer welds
both multilayer to multilayer and multilayer to solid
during in-service and fabrication inspection for some time
now. At the moment we are working on a fairly large
fabrication project including this type of weld.
We have also done validations successfully.

AE has worked well on these vessels here in Europe. Once the pressure gets above say 70% of operating the layers act as one and any noise from layers rubbing is eliminated.

Best approach is an overpressure test and then monitor during a cooldown. This provided good results. then follow up indication areas with automated UT.

Best scenario is AE followed by Automated UT gived highest POD and POS.
