Instrument Calibration per MIL-STD-2154

My company is preparing to begin the use of MIL-STD-2154 for the testing of Titanium billets. To date, we have not used this specification, since our main product lines are in the nuclear industry. Our merger with OREMET has changed that, and now I must begin to learn about the UT of titanium.

As I read the instrument requirements for MIL-STD-2154, as given in Table II of that document, I am most confused by the "Sensitivity" and "Signal-to-noise" requirements. I am not clear as to just what is being specified based upon the values given in the spec and the procedure described by ASTM.

Is there anyone who can shed some light on the intended interpretation of these specifcation requirements.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Re: Instrument Calibration per MIL-STD-2154 ne the ability to detect small
signals limited by the signal-to-noise ratio.

Signal-to-noise ratio:
Ratio of the amplitude of an ultrasonic echo arising from
the discontinuity in a material to the amplitude of the
average background noise signal (grass).

I got a pdf copy of MIL-STD 5124 from the following website. The site has a free search and download facility.

These other sites might be of use, but as far as I know they do not have any document download.
