ultrasound transducer info needed.

I would like to know if my understanding of how transducers works is correct. A short voltage pulse is sent to an element in the transducer housing, which causes the element to deform in a certain dimention. When the element is no longer excited, it resonates and this is what causes the mechanical wave (ultrasound). Is this correct?
