ASME code for UT on Cat D nozzle welds

What ASME code applies to UT on Cat D nozzle welds?

ASME Sec VIII Div 1 UW-11(a)(7) says:
ultrasonic examination in accordance with UW-53 [which
refers to Appendix 12] may be substituted for radiography
for the final closure seam of a pressure vessel if the construction
of the vessel does not permit interpretable radiographs in
accordance with Code requirements.

So if RT is not feasible, Sec VIII allows UT on the final closure weld. What about the rest of the nozzle weld volume? Would Case 2235 apply?

Thanks for your input.

Dave

As Code Case 2235 says "its the opinion of the Committee that ALL welds in material 1/2" (13mm) or greater in thickness in PV's may be examined using UT in lieu of RT" with a list of conditions to be complied with, isnt it the contractor's option to use 2235, unless RT is contractually required for all volumetric NDT?

I see nothing ion the conditions of 2235-9 which precludes UT examination of Cat D nozzles provided the conditions are met.

Nigel is correct on the Code Case. There is also a 'daughter' Code Case that requires the vessel to be stamped UT-3 [or whatever] instead of RT-3, etc. when UT is used in lieu of RT, per Case 2235. Cat. D nozz's are not typically required to be RT'd, so they [generally] don't require UT [or RT]. Since no interpretable RT's can readily be made of Cat. D nozz's, your customer and/or AI will be anticipating UT anyway.

mances of portable X-Ray sets. Despite having managed to halve the weight of similar portable X-Ray generators available on the market (while continuing to provide the same power output), the SITEX CPSERIES generators feature a shutter, a laser pointer, a beryllium window, an aluminum filter and two integrated diaphragms (customized sizes are available upon request). Without compromising the robustness and reliability for which ICM products are renowned, the small size and light weight of the SITEX CPSERIES will radically change the way that you perform your RT inspections. And you will see a positive impact in terms of both quality and return on investment (ROI).
