Wood Species Differentiation Technologies

We are seeking for a technology or a combination of technologies to discriminate on line, in real time and in harsh industrial environment different wood species (mostly spruce, pine and fir) whether the wood is in the form of a whole tree-length, a log (barked or unbarked), sawn wood or wood chips, whether the wood is frozen or not.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Vincent

Vincent,
The upcoming 16th International Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium
Beijing, China, May 11-13, 2009, http://www.ndt2009.cn/, is probably a valuable source of information.
My first idea would be a knowledge based visual + IR system. We use LIBS (laser induced breakdown spectroscopy) for concrete type determination (works also for glass or metal sorting). No idea at the moment, if that could help.
Regards, Ernst

We have real-time x-ray based system that can be used for sorting woods depending on its density. The need not have direct with the detector. This may be of your interest.

Conformable wedge transducer

The conformability is obtained with a flexible membrane filled with water between the transducer and
...
the inspected component. The coupling between the membrane and the component requires a small quantity of water or couplant. The conformable wedge combines the acoustic performance of immersion technique with good coupling and low attenuation.

Compact NDT inspection-heads for measurements with active thermography

The compact inspection head is suitable for thermographic ndt tasks. The uncooled infrared camera
...
is specially developed for NDI-tasks and offers a thermal sensitivity until now known only from thermal imagers with cooled detector. All required components and functions are integrated into the inspection-head. You will only need an ethernet cable to connect the sensor with the evaluation system.

NEW! The PragmaPro Instrument Platform

The PragmaPro is based on a modular cartridge technology and supports various NDT instrument modal
...
ities such as UT, PAUT, ECT and many more. This new platform is based on a machined, powder-coated aluminum frame for shock-proofness, best sealing qualities and maximum heat dissipation. This is practical to extend the outdoor temperature range and/or to extend the power injected in the transducers. The PragmaPro is aiming at a very wide range of applications, such as weld scanning, corrosion mapping and composite testing.
