Minimum Thickness for Process Piping Inspection with UT
I have been trying to get some information on the minimum thickness that can be inspected with UT for new construction of process piping and no literature seems to point clearly to this limitation. Can anyone help me out?

not sure your question explains your problem. We can do UT on ultra thin sections such as silicon wafers in micrchips - ultimately the minimum thickness is guided by equipment, frequencies, wave modes. application and costs. In process piping all too often people define the minimum thickness they can measure based on what equipment (often transducers) they have available and not based on what they could do if they obtained the right equipment and technique. We find many people claiming that they cannot do less than 5 mm (I encountered this only the other week) however give them the correct transducer and set up and suddenly they can do 1.5 mm. You need to define what you need to measure, develop the correct set up and then see if it can be performed properly and effectively in the field.

To explain more clearly, does B31.3 have a limit on the minimum thickness that can be inspected for carbon steel using shear wave? I am guessing the limitation is more geometric than anything else (weld cap). However, if the weld cap is ground flush for the inspection, does B31.3 have a limitation on the thickness that can be inspected. I know it has a limitation on the diameter that can be inspected, but thickness?
