We have been trying to imporve our mechanical integrity of our 317L SS piping ranging in size from 4 in to 16 in pipe. We have standarized our welding procedures but conyinue to have leaks due to corrosion at the flange face-to-neck weld on the
inside diameter corner. The metallurgical analysis report I recieved determined the probable cause of the corrosion to be crevice corrosion, assisted by dissimilar
metallurgy between the flange base and weld metals.
We have looked at shear wave to try to identify problem flanges thus far unless we take appart each flange to inspect we have not found a solution. Attached is a copyof the report.

You might talk to GE about their work on detecting flange face corrosion and the kits they developed for the Phasor. Its not exactly the same as your application but some of the learning from that application might help. the problem may be the challenges of 317L but its worth a discussion.
