Is UT of 260 mm dia steel rod having .5 mm nickel base coating possible?

Yes, it is possible. Just do a normal inspection and where the bonding is good, the beam would go through and pick up the defects in the steel bar as usual. Where the bonding is bad, there would be a lot of reflection and the whole screen would show many spikes and noise. I have not tested this particular type of coating but have used a similar approach for other materials. Pl. try and let me know your experience.
