what is the purpose of group no. in asme sec-ix and on what base it classified.

Mr. Suthar, if you mean Group# [versus P#], the Group#'s are subsets of the P#'s that group materials with similar heat-input and heat-treatment characteristics, per ASME Section IX.
Group# is a Supplementary Essential Variable, and is used for controlled heat input Weld Procedures, like when the Impact Strength at Low Temperature is being tested and recorded during the Procedure Qualification.

Group Numbers are assigned additionally to P-Numbers. These Group Numbers classify the metals within P-Numbers for the purpose of procedure qualification where notch-toughness ( Charpy V-notch impact test ) requirements are specified.
( Refer : QW.200.3 )

So, whenever the codes requires Impact testing, WPS shall specify the Supplimentary essential variables also, and PQR shall reflect the actual p Number's and its applicable Group Numbers, any changes after in WPS need to be requalified with a PQR again.

Nelson, that is so basic that the answer is almost hard. This info comes from the definition of "P#" and "Group#". It is part of the foundation of ASME Sect IX. Without it, every different material spec & grade would require its own individualized PQR and WPS.
